Can I travel to the UK with an ESTA?
Contents:
Since the Brexit, the question of traveling to the UK with an ESTA often comes up. Many travelers still confuse the American Visa Waiver Program with British requirements.
Short answer: no, the ESTA does not allow you to enter the UK.
What is ESTA?
ESTA is an electronic authorization issued by the United States. It applies to nationals of countries belonging to the Visa Waiver Program, such as France, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain.
The ESTA allows you to travel to the United States for up to 90 days, for tourism, business or transit, without a visa. It is valid only for the U.S. territory (including Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam).
Can I use ESTA to enter the UK?
No. The UK has no administrative link with the ESTA system.
Even if you’re passing through the USA on your way to London, Manchester or Edinburgh, the ESTA only authorizes you to transit the USA, not to enter the UK.
The UK has had its own immigration rules since January 1, 2021, the date of its official exit from the European Union.
What authorization do I need to travel to the UK?
Since 2024, the UK has been implementing its own system: the British ETA.
This scheme is similar to ESTA, but valid only for the UK. It is gradually being rolled out to nationals of several countries, and will be mandatory for all visa-free visitors in the next few years.
ETA UK enables:
- to enter the UK for a stay of less than 6 months;
- travel for tourism, business or transit;
- be electronically linked to your passport.
Not to be confused with :
- ESTA → United States
- ETA UK → United Kingdom
Can I transit through the USA before going to the UK?
Yes, but be careful:
- For flights to the United States: you need a valid ESTA or an American visa.
- For entry into the UK: you need to meet UK entry requirements (passport, possibly ETA, etc.).
If you are only transiting through an American airport on your way to London, you must still obtain an ESTA for this passage.
Practical advice before you leave
- Always check the validity of your passport (at least 6 months after your return date).
- Apply for your ESTA or ETA at least 72 hours before departure.
