Here is a poem that was written for the 343 Maine Men who died.

FOR 343

For 343 that didn’t come home like the rest

For 343 that was Army, Navy, Air force and the Marines best

For 343 that were from Maine

For 343 your families will never be the same

For 343 we ask was it right, to lose Maine boys in a far away fight

For 343 their parents can’t tell their children good night

For 343 their names are on the wall so dark and gray

For 343 they died in a land of mud and clay

For 343 they came from one hundred and fifty one towns

They will never walk again on Maine ground

For 343 their years were young from 18 and up

Who knew what they were gonna have to give up

For 343 the years were 65 to 75

For 343 we all prayed they would come back alive

For 343 god kept opening his door even though we didn’t want him to take anymore

For 343 heaven opened its gate for loved ones whose tears were of love and hate

For 343 they held ranks from Private to major, we wanted to protect them from harm

 and danger  

For 343 it was so far from home and to die over there was to die alone

For 343 we want people to know for each one of the names there’s a face and a soul

For 343 I want each one to know they are still loved in our hearts and souls

For 343 their mothers did cry

For 343 their fathers prayed for them not to die

For 343 the flag was red, white and blue

For 343 we folded the flag just for you

For 343 they came from the city and countryside too

For 343 some will not sleep tonight thinking about you

                                 For 343 who sat beside us in school

For 343 whose name come up in the draft pool

For 343 I want you to know that the state did care, and

god bless your soul

For 343 I want everyone to look back and share, a time of happiness before they went there

For 343 our hero’s we share, a life time of memories brought back from there

For 343 all that is left to say, that I wish I could have helped you some how that day.
