and learn more about the Power Squadron experience.

The Penobscot Bay Power Squadron received its charter in July 1967. It initially had close
to 40 members, which grew to 81 within 2 years. The idea for a Bangor based squadron was
conceived in July 1963. Since the Kennebec River Squadron meetings were such a distance
from the Bangor area, it seemed logical to make plans to establish a Penobscot Bay
Squadron. It was an offshoot of the Kennebec River Squadron. Initially there was some
resistance from the Kennebec Squadron, after all these were their members!

Today there are over 140 members, and several charter members are still active members of the PBSPS. In 2000, the name was officially changed to The Penobscot Bay Sail And Power Squadron. The word 'Sail' was included to show that sailing has a large, active following within the squadron.

We participate in the Bangor Boat Show each spring, as well as Boat Safety week. The squadron also provides a vessel safety check service to the boating community.

Advanced classes such as Piloting, Advanced Piloting, and Seamanship are regularly given, with others such as Weather, Engine Maintenance, and Cruise Planning given as interest and instructor availability allows. We have Rendezvous' scheduled at various times throughout the boating season.

Our news letter, "NOW HEAR THIS", is published and mailed periodically.
