MORE FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The following ia a partial list of financial aid and scholarship sources. This is not a comprehensive list but we hope it is helpful. All colleges have financial aid departments that can give you more information on these and other opportunities.

The Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship

The Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by the Maine Legislature and staff to annually recognize one student from each county who is currently or is planning to pursue their education at a two- or four-year degree-granting Maine college or technical school. This scholarship is available for full or part-time students.

Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation for Low Income Women and Children

Low-income mothers who are pursuing education or training are eligible to apply for Education Suport Awards. The foundation will award five grants of up to $2000 each in 2007. Applications must be postmarked no later than July 1, 2007.

Maine Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) The Maine Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) is a federal education initiative established to promote access to post-secondary education for traditionally under-represented adult populations within the State of Maine. As part of it's pre-entry service, MEOC Counselors coordinate efforts with area schools, colleges, and other service agencies to provide information and assistance in completing college admission and financial aid forms. MEOC counselors can assess academic readiness, provide career counseling, and refer individuals to community resources. MEOC is committed to assist any adult wishing to re-enter a formal education setting. Funded to serve traditionally under-represented adults, the majority of MEOC participants are of the first generation in their families to go to college.

FEMA Disaster Assistance

MAIN is passing this email along from the Maine Federal Emergency Management Agency. If you have questions, please contact them directly. 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) www.fema.gov

DEADLINE TO ASK FOR HELP: July 9, 2007

If You Suffered Damage from the Severe Storms and Flooding that Occurred April 15 - 23, and live in the counties of Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Oxford or York, You May Be Eligible for State and Federal Disaster Assistance.

Please call and register if you were affected by the storms. The last day to apply is July 9, 2007. Call to Apply:
1-800-621-FEMA (3362) 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

For those who use TTY: 1-800-462-7585 or Apply Online: www.fema.gov Before you go online or call to apply, it is helpful to have the following information ready:

  • Phone number where you can be reached
  • Your Social Security number
  • A list of damages and losses you suffered
  • Your insurance company and your policy number
  • Bank account and routing numbers if you wish to speed up your assistance with direct deposit

Some Key Things to Remember

The money that is provided to disaster victims comes from taxes. All citizens in declared counties, that are/were affected by the disaster, are eligible to apply for aid.

If someone called their local emergency management or fire department and reported damages, they still need to call FEMA. The only way to apply for FEMA aid is to call 1-800-621-3362 and register.

There is a limited amount of time. People have until July 9, 2007 to apply for aid. This is the deadline, those who apply afterwards will not receive assistance! Even if someone fixed their damages, or someone thinks that they do not need help, it is so important to apply because you may need assistance later (but that assistance will not be available unless the apply before July 9th).

Citizenship - by law FEMA can only provide assistance to US citizens. However, if there is someone you know that is not a citizen, but they are the parent of a child born in the US (and the child has a social security number), they can apply under the child's name and social security number (our 1-800-621-3362 number can help them with this).
