This set of links will be to online reference materials, especially texts of books and articles. No library has the room or the money to provide physical copies of everything anyone may want, but much more can be downloaded through the Internet. Note that there will be multiple pages.
These databases have been licensed by the State of Maine and may be accessed from anywhere by clicking "Remote Access" and entering the name of your local library.
Anistoriton: Free and Full Text
Links to Hundreds of periodicals in the fields of History, Archaeology and Art History (all three defined very broadly.) Nearly all are free and full text.

This site at the University of Pennsylvania has links to more than 16,000 books available online. Searchable. (In English)
This site is one of my favorites. It is constantly being added to. It contains works (from short poems to complete books) in Latin, Greek, German, French, Italian, Spanish and English, from all periods but with an emphasis on Classical and Mediaeval works. Many of these are not available anywhere else. Can be browsed by author or by century within each language. (The link occasionally does not work.)
The first collection of texts on the Internet, and still one of the largest. (In English)
The German Project Gutenberg, this contains almost all the classics of German Literature. (In German) Has been down for some time, but will resume the middle of September 2002.
A searchable (by author, title and period) collection of classics in Spanish. Also has links to similar collections in Catalan and Gallego-Portuguese.
This site in Switzerland has a large collection of French language literature, as well as links to thousands of books in other languages. The link is to the English version of the home page.
This collection of latin literature, classical, mediaeval, and neolatin, began as the project of a high school student in Virginia.There are links to translations of many the works, as well.
 
The Latin Library
Another large collection of latin literature, very frequently updated.
A collection of online theses and dissertations from various universities around the world. A fairly new project, so far only contains works in French but English and Spanish at least should be added later on.
The major site for Dutch literature on the web. (In Dutch)
Several hundred rare books on mathematics in a page image format. Designed to be read online rather than downloaded. The Cornell site also has several other "libraries" including one on core works on agriculture.
A small number of texts available to non-UVa students, but includes some interesting material. Organized by language and subject area.
A number of journals and other publications associated with the University of Virginia, including full text of Studies in Bibliography, Essays in History, IT Journal, Virginia Education Review, and Journal of Southern Religion.
This site at the University of Vermont has more than twenty online scholarly journals,ranging from Electronic Antiquity to the Journal of the Japanese Society for Technology Education.
