Meeting of March 13, 2002

The Treasurer’s Report showed a balance of $1737.51 in the checking account. This includes the donation of $710 toward the printing and distribution of The Library Lookout from Skowhegan Savings Bank. The Renovation/restoration fund remains at $11, 615.83.

The Fund Raising Committee report that the Library Lunch will be held on April 12th. Previously the $6.00 sandwich lunch has been available only to business people on Water Street and Madison Avenue. This year there will be menus and order blanks at the Library for anyone who wishes to participate. The lunches will be delivered to the place where the order originated (the business or the Library) The annual May lawn sale was also mentioned. All donations will be gratefully received.

Article 4, section 3 of the FOL by-laws regarding terms for Executive Board Members was suspended. (Anyone who wishes to become more active in the Friends should consider becoming a member of the Board. That is the best way to get fresh ideas and energy. If enough of you get on the Board, we will be able to reinstate our Term Limits!)

The Civil Rights Team at the Skowhegan Area High School invited us to attend “Women in History”, a program to be held at the high school.

Following the meeting, an interesting assortment of people gave book reports. Among them was Maxine Russakoff who commented on three: Tuesdays With Morrie, The Tennis Partner and Comfort Me with Apples. Sixth grader Hannah Pillsbury helped us to understand The Dark is Rising with imaginatively hand-made props. She also reviewed Win Dixie. The subject matter of the reports ranged from young adult fiction to marine biology. Will Reid talked about The Freshwater Mussels of Maine. Nancy Warren treated us to a review of The God of Small Things. Both sad and funny, this book is based in a particular area in India. Another book showing life in India, Death of Vishnu, was reviewed by school teacher Marilyn Renfrew. Jack Gibson told us about The Wilderness from Chamberlain Farm by Dean Bennett. There were many more book reports, all interesting, all unique. Among them was Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings reviewed by Yale Boynton. As this 6th grade student says, the book is “not for people who can’t take intense parts and almost death defying passages.”

Don’t forget to come to the meeting on May 9th when we will have another interesting program. Meetings are your best opportunity to influence the direction of the Friends of the Skowhegan Free Public Library.
