Annual Community Reading Day
Wednesday, April 14, 1999
Community Reading Day, perhaps BEF's most visible, popular and successful program, enters its seventh and largest year in 1999. Since its inception in 1993, Community reading day has grown from a small but enthusiastic project into a regional event that last year sent hundreds of volunteer readers to 30 schools in 20 area communities bringing a love of reading to nearly 10,000 enthusiastic children. The 1998 event, celebrated on April 15, 1998, welcomed yet another community, bringing to 31 the number of communities participating.
Planners are working on two new initiatives this year.
First, BEF is seeking new and additional corporate sponsors to help purchase the hundreds of books that are distributed to each of the participating schools. If you or your company can help, call Geoff Gratwick at 947-0637 (h) or 945-9442 (w).
Second, in response to the growing interest in the community reading day theme, BEF volunteers are also busily preparing a "how-to" manual to distribute to school districts outside the greater Bangor Area who wish to begin their own reading day tradition.
If you can contribute to either of these new projects, would like to help coordinate Community Reading Day, or simply would like to help as a reader or volunteer, please contact Gig Weeks at 947-6696.
