The
Bangor Sk8park Index It's finally up and running!! The history of the Bangor Sk8park Committee goes back to 2 years ago. We the sk8boarders wanted and needed a sk8park to practice and have fun sk8boarding, since we were constantly getting harassed by police and businesses, getting our boards taken away cops, and there really wasn't anywhere to skateboard around this area. We formed a committee of kids and then we elected Kathy Leen to head and facilitate the meeting so that we could get more things done and go in the right direction. Slowly word got around and more and more kids started coming to the meetings and helping out. We started meeting every Tuesday at 3:30 at the Bangor Public Library and have been ever since for 2 years! Through all this time we have not only worked on getting an sk8park but also on the images that some adults or people see skateboarders as. We gave people a clean good perception of young kids and skateboarders instead of the usual trouble making punk kids that some people may think about. We did this by,
Through all of this we have gained respect from city officials, representatives, businesses, and a lot of other people around. Some of the really devoted committee members that have been helping out almost the whole way are:
Fundraising has been a big part of the Bangor Sk8park. For as soon as we started meeting as a committee, we realized that we were going to have to start fundraising as quickly as possible. Our first fundraising venture was to put out collection jars at willing businesses around the Bangor area. We have been steadily collecting these jars for about two years around every week or so, at the following businesses. We then decided that we still would need more to reach our goals. We did not know the exact amount of money we need to raise then but we figured it was around 30,000 dollors. Over the next year we organized bottle drives, car washes, applied for grants and bills, and set up sk8park booths at various events such as October fest in Downtown Bangor to help raise more money. We got a big break in may of 2000, when the Bangor Noon Time Rotary decided to donated 50% of the proceeds from their annul auction to the Bangor Sk8park. This was great news for us and it built up our hopes even higher. After this we got in touch and began working with Eastern Maine Charities as an official non-profit 501 C3. Which is great because now they can take care of our hard earned money and also most businesses or organizations will not donate anything to you if you are not a non-profit organization. With this cooperation we started to work on sending fundraising letters to some 400 businesses around the Bangor area. This was a great idea but, I think we put this together to late because it was around summer vacation and many people were not around and many businesses had already given their donation money away to other organizations and groups. So this event came up as a little disappointment, with all the time and work we put into it. We then began to make new sk8park t-shirts and decided to start to sell them as another source of fundraising. They were a pretty big hit when we first made them and we sold a pretty good amount. The rules are as follows:
We are about 75% of the way to getting all of our estimated $50,000 sk8park. With more donations and more fundraising it shouldn't be too much longer before the Bangor Sk8park is 100% up and running for everyone to use and enjoy. For the time being, there are no fundraisers or events scheduled for the Sk8park, but stay tuned because we expect some in the near future, to raise enough money to build the rest of the park. The Bangor Sk8park T-shirts were made about a year ago. Alex Clifford designed the front design and Joel England designed the back design. The size and prices are as follows:
These t-shirts were printed for us by T-Rex Imprinters on Hammond Street in Bangor and we would like to thank them for supporting us and helping us get our sk8park. If you would like to purchase your very own sk8park t-shirt click here and email Chris Ballesteros, or you can contact Eastern Maine Charities on State Street in Bangor. The design and layout was made and designed by Chris Ballesteros who is a sk8boarder and has been in the sk8park committee for about 2 years. He took all the things that he could think of that would make a sk8park fun and other designs from other well made parks and put them all together to form the Bangor Sk8park with the exception that it had to be relatively low budget. The city of Bangor paved and gave us a 15,000 sq ft amoeba shaped pad of tar to place the ramps on, which is directly behind the Paul Bunyan Statue. The sk8park consists of:
We decided that with the first part of the money we had, we would begin to order the ramps for the sk8park so it could be open for the summer of 2001. But we only had a portion of the money needed to purchase all the ramps, so we bought the miniramp, both tabletops and some funboxes. We figured that the fastest and best quality way to get the ramps were though a company called Big Daddy. We experienced some difficulties with them but we finally have the ramps and they are all ready for sk8ing. And as soon as we receive the rest of the money needed to build the rest of the park we are going to hire a contractor to build and put to together the rest of the ramps to fit our custom design perfectly. Please, if you want to help in any way, with anything, you can call Eastern Maine Charities or email Chris Ballesteros by clicking here and he will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you.
