The City of Bangor, Maine is located on the west side of the Penobscot River only 26 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful coast of Maine. In the 1800's Bangor was known for it's shipping, lumber and transportation industry. Today, Bangor is the third largest city in Maine with a residential population of 33,000 and a week day population that often exceeds 100,000 with many citizens commuting to the City for their employment and recreation.
The Bangor Police Department was permanently established in 1889 with a force of 13. In 1957 the words "Bangor Police" encircling the city seal was added to the uniform as the shoulder patch which was mostly red in color. The patch displays a rising sun with a large pine tree in the center representing the lumber growth of Bangor. In front of the tree is a plow representing the agricultural growth, and anchor representing the shipping growth and a wheel which represents the transportation growth. In 1972 the patch was changed to the blue color that it bears today.
At the present time the Bangor Police Department has a force of 69 officers and a civilian staff of 19. The men and women who wear this patch daily are proud and dedicated to the law enforcement profession.
